There are so many reasons to support our local libraries.
Libraries are one of the last places where we can simply exist—no expectations, no obligations. They provide vital community connections. Just last month, I walked into my local library and overheard a librarian having a long, thoughtful conversation with a man looking for resources like temporary housing and a community kitchen. He came to the library because he knew he’d find help there.
Libraries also play an essential role in building community. Through our library’s weekly baby program, I’ve met other moms, asked questions about daycare options, and learned about more programs that connect me with other families.
They promote literacy and lifelong learning with reading competitions and monthly book programs, and they even boost the local economy. Libraries are where people search for jobs, fill out applications, and work on resumes. Librarians often go the extra mile, helping with everything from cover letters to interview prep.
Libraries are truly a gem.
That’s why, throughout the year, I rarely buy books. Instead, I check out everything from my local library, whether it’s a physical copy or an e-book through the Libby app. It’s guilt-free reading: I don’t feel bad if I don’t finish a book, and if my library doesn’t have a newly released title, they’re usually quick to acquire it when I request it.
So, how do I build my own library—because yes, I am very fond of having my own collection?
Whenever I read a book I must own, I add it to my buy list. At the end of the year, I share that list with my family and friends and ask for books as Christmas gifts. The result? The best book haul a girl could ask for.
This year, I compiled my to-buy list on Bookshop.org so you can shop it too. Every title is Natalie Approved, spanning all genres—history, classics, fantasy, romance—you name it. I’m a nondiscriminatory reader!
